Buying a Ledger is one of the smartest moves you can make in crypto. But the setup process can feel intimidating if you’ve never done it before. This guide walks you through every step — from unboxing to your first transaction.
What You’ll Need
- Your Ledger device (Nano S Plus, Nano X, Stax, or Flex)
- A computer or smartphone
- The Ledger Live app

Step 1 — Unbox and Inspect Your Device
Before anything else, check the packaging. A genuine Ledger arrives in sealed, tamper-evident packaging. The device should show a “Welcome” screen when you first plug it in.
Red flags to watch for:
- Pre-configured PIN already set
- Recovery phrase already written on the card
- Packaging looks opened or resealed
If anything looks suspicious, do not use the device. Contact Ledger support immediately.
Step 2 — Download Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official app for managing your crypto. Always download it from the official source:
ledger.com/ledger-live
Available for:
- macOS, Windows, Linux
- iOS and Android
Never download Ledger Live from a third-party source — only from ledger.com.
Step 3 — Connect Your Device
Plug your Ledger into your computer via USB (or connect via Bluetooth if using Nano X or Stax). Open Ledger Live and select “Set up a new Ledger”.
Follow the on-screen instructions to:
- Choose your device model
- Start the setup on the device itself
Step 4 — Set Your PIN
On the device, you’ll be prompted to set a PIN. This is what protects your wallet if someone physically gets hold of your device.
PIN rules:
- 4 to 8 digits
- Avoid obvious codes (1234, 0000, your birthdate)
- The device wipes itself after 3 incorrect PIN attempts
Navigate using the buttons on the device, confirm your PIN twice.
Step 5 — Write Down Your Recovery Phrase
This is the most critical step. Ledger will display a 24-word recovery phrase — one word at a time. Write every word down on the recovery sheet included in the box, in the exact order shown.
Non-negotiable rules:
- Never photograph your recovery phrase
- Never type it into any app, website, or computer
- Never store it in a cloud service (Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox)
- Store the paper in a safe, fireproof location
Your recovery phrase is the master key to your crypto. Anyone who has it can access your funds — permanently.
Step 6 — Verify Your Recovery Phrase
After writing it down, Ledger Live will ask you to verify the phrase by selecting specific words in the correct order. This confirms you wrote it down correctly.
Don’t skip this step — it’s your proof that your backup works.
Step 7 — Install Coin Apps
Ledger uses separate apps for each blockchain. In Ledger Live:
- Go to My Ledger tab
- Find the app for your coin (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.)
- Click Install
Each app is small and installs directly onto the device. You can install and uninstall apps freely — your funds are always safe on the blockchain.
Step 8 — Add Accounts and Receive Crypto
In Ledger Live, go to Accounts → Add account. Select your coin, connect the device, and open the corresponding app on the device. Ledger Live will generate your wallet address.
To receive crypto:
- Click Receive in Ledger Live
- Select your account
- Verify the address on the physical device screen — never trust what’s shown on your computer alone
- Share the address with the sender
Step 9 — Send Your First Transaction
To send crypto:
- Click Send in Ledger Live
- Enter the recipient address and amount
- Review the transaction on your Ledger device screen
- Physically press the button to confirm
This physical confirmation is what makes hardware wallets so secure — malware on your computer cannot approve transactions without your physical button press.
You’re All Set
Your Ledger is now fully configured. Your private keys are secured in the hardware, your recovery phrase is safely stored offline, and you can manage your portfolio through Ledger Live.
Remember: Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase. If anyone does — it’s a scam.
