AI coding assistants are no longer optional — they’re the difference between shipping in 2 days vs 5. But which one is worth paying for?
We used Claude, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor on real production React/Node.js projects for 2 months. Here’s what we found.
TL;DR
| Claude (API) | GitHub Copilot | Cursor | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Architecture, debugging | Autocomplete | Full IDE workflow |
| Price/mo | ~$20 (usage) | $10 | $20 |
| Context window | 200k tokens | Limited | 200k tokens |
| IDE integration | Any (API) | VS Code, JetBrains | Built-in VS Code |
| Verdict | 🏆 Best reasoning | ✅ Most seamless | 🚀 Most productive |
GitHub Copilot — The Seamless Choice
Copilot lives inside your editor invisibly. It doesn’t interrupt your flow — suggestions appear as you type, you hit Tab to accept.
Where it shines:
- Boilerplate and repetitive code (CRUD operations, form handlers)
- Autocompleting patterns it’s seen before
- Works across 20+ languages without configuration
Where it struggles:
- Complex business logic — suggestions are often plausible but wrong
- Large codebase context — it doesn’t “see” your whole project
- Explaining why something should be done differently
Price: $10/mo individual, $19/mo business.

Cursor — The Productive IDE
Cursor is a VS Code fork with AI deeply embedded. You can select code, hit Cmd+K, and say “refactor this to use async/await” — it edits in place.
Where it shines:
- Refactoring and editing existing code
@codebasecommand — references your entire project- Inline diffs — see exactly what changed before applying
Where it struggles:
- You’re locked into Cursor’s VS Code fork
- Expensive if you use it heavily ($20/mo + API costs)
Price: $20/mo (includes Claude and GPT-4o calls)

Claude — The Thinking Partner
Claude isn’t an IDE plugin — it’s a conversation. But with a 200k token context window, you can paste your entire codebase and ask “why is this memory leak happening?”
Where it shines:
- Debugging complex, hard-to-reproduce issues
- Architecture decisions — it reasons through tradeoffs
- Writing and reviewing PRs, documentation
- Anything requiring understanding of the whole system
Where it struggles:
- No IDE integration out of the box
- You have to copy-paste code manually (unless you use API)
Price: Claude.ai Pro is $20/mo. API usage varies.

Our Recommendation
For most developers: Start with Copilot ($10/mo) + Claude.ai Pro ($20/mo). You get seamless autocomplete AND a powerful reasoning partner for hard problems.
If you want one tool: Cursor — it combines both in one place, though it’s more expensive.
